Dentition quick reference notation maps for deciduous and adult dentition can be found below. They show abbreviated forms of the two most common notation formats (the FDI/ISO 3950 format, paleoanthropological notation, and a dental notation most commonly used in Scandinavia). Note that we enter data in a slightly different format in the BIAD database.

A more complete table of dental notation can be found here. This is not an exhaustive list of dental notation formats, but it should contain some of the most common methods and the corresponding “long-hand” descriptions of each tooth.

Why do we use the BIAD notation in the database?
We use the BIAD notation for three primary reasons. First, the BIAD notation handles incomplete entries more smoothly than many of the methods used in modern dentistry. Columns can easily be left “NULL" if data is missing, like the side of the mouth the tooth is from. Second, typos in data entry are more likely to produce nonsensical codes than if the numeric codes were used. Therefore mistakes are more likely to be noticed and corrected. Finally, using a coding system that removes special characters and superscript/subscript means that data is easier to enter and more readily understood by non-specialists.
